The close economic ties between Europe and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) have had a decisive influence on the relationship between both sides in recent years. This interactive infographic from the Bertelsmann Foundation provides a visual overview of the development of demographics, trade flows, customs, and free trade agreements around the Mediterranean.
This comparative approach makes the effects of China’s and the USA’s increased economic policy efforts in the region visible. At the same time, the experts at the Bertelsmann Stiftung are looking into the future and asking how mutual trade relations between the countries of the MENA region and the EU can be better used for a common socio-ecological transformation.
Particular attention is paid to how shared potential can be used more fairly in partnership. The main issue here is the question of on what basis and in what constellations updated trading relationships support various new and well-known initiatives such as the European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus (EFSD+), the EU Hydrogen Bank, Global Gateway and the EU Green Deal. And which Green Partnerships can meaningfully complement them.
In addition to peace, which the Middle East urgently needs, the challenges of the social and ecological transformation of the economy and society in the Mediterranean region are pushing the states and societies of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa to act together. A light snack and networking will follow the discussion.
