Driven by an aggressive, isolationist agenda, Trump\u2019s proposed policies require European leaders to prepare for potential upheavals and take proactive measures to safeguard their core interests.<\/em> <em>In this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bertelsmann-stiftung.de\/en\/publications\/publication\/did\/trump-20-what-is-at-stake-for-europe-and-germany-en\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\u00d6ffnet in einem neuen Tab\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">policy brief<\/a>, Brandon Bohrn and Peter Walkenhorst examine the challenges Europe and Germany would face under a second Trump term, focusing on NATO and security, Ukraine, economy and trade, technology policy, and democracy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump could return to the White House, with polls showing a razor-thin margin as Election Day on 5 November looms. Political leaders and the public in Germany and Europe appear to underestimate the potential consequences of this outcome.<\/p>\n<p>While the European Commission and several German ministries have drafted contingency plans to respond to confrontational measures from a new Trump administration, some policymakers and parts of the public still cling to a \u201cprinciple of hope\u201d for a Kamala Harris victory or, at the very least, a less consequential Trump presidency.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, a realistic engagement with the far-reaching consequences of \u201cTrump 2.0\u201d is urgently needed now to prepare and build political support for necessary actions. In the following areas, shifts and decisions threaten to impact core interests of Europe and Germany:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Security and NATO<\/em><\/strong>, as Trump could withdraw from NATO or make its security commitments contingent upon a dramatic and rapid increase in European military spending.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Ukraine<\/em><\/strong>, as Trump could drastically cut back or completely halt military and financial support for Ukraine, pushing it toward a peace agreement involving concessions to Russia.
