How is it evolving?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>These are the questions many analysts are posing as the war in Ukraine continues. The following graphs show how the intense debate on energy security, energy-saving measures, and efforts to support Ukraine in defending itself against Russian aggression have influenced views across Europe since the war began.<\/p>\n<p>What do Europeans think? Each quarter since March 2022, we\u2019ve polled residents in 27 EU countries publishing their opinions on the war in Ukraine and tracking changes over time.<\/p>\n<p>The questions asked fall under the following three topics:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The EU\u2019s role in the world and its capacity to strengthen this role.<\/li>\n<li>The policies aiming to support Ukraine in its war effort: weapons delivery, acceptance of refugees, energy independence, EU-enlargement and common European defence policy.<\/li>\n<li>Personal concerns.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Europeans want to see the EU play an\u00a0active role in world affairs\u00a0<\/strong>\u200b<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"postContentEmbed\">\n<div class=\"embedContainer\"><iframe title=\"EU27: The European Union should play a more active role in world affairs.\" aria-label=\"Interactive line chart\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-LnNig\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/LnNig\/2\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"width: 0; It\u2019s still up 2 percentage points since June 2022 but down by 7 since September 22 when it reached its apex (see next chart).\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Highest levels reported in Poland\u00a0(52%), France, the Netherlands and\u00a0Germany (45%).\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Though still the top-cited concern in\u00a0Italy and Spain, the cost of living as a\u00a0concern is lowest in these countries\u00a0(29% and 37%, respectively). However, it has since rebounded to last year\u2019s levels. <strong>Additionally, support for energy independence <\/strong>(- 9 percentage points since March 2022) <strong>and acceptance of Ukrainian refugees <\/strong>(- 7 percentage points) are waning.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, there remains strong overall support for policies aiding Ukraine and Ukrainians.
