Juni 2020","date_unix":1591982976,"date_modified_unix":1644496205,"date_iso":"2020-06-12T17:29:36+00:00","content":"<p><em>East Asia has three different stories when it comes to world class patents in cutting-edge technologies: One each for China, South Korea, and Japan. In particular China and South Korea have shown a unique increase in innovation power during the last two decades. Here is a summary of the findings from our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bertelsmann-stiftung.de\/en\/publications\/publication\/did\/world-class-patents-in-cutting-edge-technologies\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\u00d6ffnet in einem neuen Tab\" >new study<\/a><\/em><em>.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Having a look at what is important<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Our analysis looks at the top ten percent of patents in 58 cutting-edge technologies. We identify the best patents in those cutting-edge technologies by considering the <strong>market coverage<\/strong> and <strong>citation by official examiners<\/strong> of the <strong>active patent portfolio<\/strong>. Taking such an approach gives a more realistic picture of the patent situation around the world.<\/p>\n<div class=\"postContentEmbed\">\n<div class=\"embedContainer embedContainer--video\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Patents: Which country has the most patents related to fertilizers?  (from 2000 to 2019)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/92fE1BFqvYw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>China\u2019s share in world class patents is soaring <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Especially since the beginning of the 2010s, the Chinese share of world class patents has been soaring. Chinese companies are focusing more and more on research and development. They no longer want to be the \u201cworkbench of the world\u201d, but take a well-thought-out industrial policy approach with their strategy \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bst-europe.eu\/trade-and-investment\/is-china-systematically-buying-up-german-key-technologies\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\u00d6ffnet in einem neuen Tab\" >Made in China 2025<\/a>\u201d (MIC 2025). Within MIC 2025, China defines ten key sectors with future relevance in which they want to reach a preeminent position in the world. It scores particularly well in the crucial next-generation network 5G and in digital technologies. Those strengths could pay back twice in the future as they are highly relevant to the proliferation of other technologies. Japan exhibits and defends certain strengths such as battery tech and electric vehicles. There it is in a leading position. But in other technologies, Japan is quickly losing ground.
