In many ways, this has been our most challenging episode, with Turkey taking unexpected plot twists seemingly on a daily basis. For example, just days prior to my trip to the country, on July 15, 2016, elements of the Turkish military staged a coup attempt against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The putsch failed, but that day stands out as a clear “before” and “after” moment for Turkish democracy.

To gain a better understanding of the coup’s ramifications I interviewed Turkey expert Soner Cagaptay of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. You can click the video above to hear what he had to say.

Of course, this video shows us just one view on one aspect of Turkey’s intricate political and economical situation. Over the next couple of weeks we aim to expand this focus and to give you a most detailed picture of where Turkey stands right now and where it might be heading. Check back next week for the launch of our new Crossroads episode The Crossroads Turkey and stay tuned for more illuminating expert interviews in the days and weeks to follow.

If you want to read about the state of Turkey’s relationship with the EU you can click here to read our latest blogpost or click here to watch our latest video on this topic.

On July 15, 2016, elements of the Turkish military staged a coup attempt against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
